What our mission is and how the organization was founded

Mission Statement

The Migrant Rights Coalition (MRC) is a cultural organization that focuses on the empowerment of migrants, immigrants, refugees, and first-generation Americans to promote their dignity in our campus community. Our way of empowering these groups is through advocacy, community outreach, service, and inclusivity so that we can emphasize our mission and reflect it throughout the campus community. We wish that all students involved in the organization feel as though they have a place to be themselves, no matter what they’re background, and be passionate about this culture. We will extend our mission by expanding our community resources so that we can provide opportunities for all immigrants, whether locally or globally as well as changes for the global experiences of all migrants, refugees, and first generation Americans through all forms of advocacy that allow us to empower these groups.

The Founder

Meet Brayan Hernandez: the Founder of the Migrant Rights Coalition

Brayan graduated from Catholic University in 2022 with a double major in Education Studies and Politics. Brayan started MRC with the help of Daneev Imbert ‘24 (President 2022-2023), Brian Melendez ‘23 (Vice President 2022-2023), Sophia Marsden (Treasurer 2021) and Cindy Cintron ‘23 (Vice President 2021-2022).

“I started the Migrant Rights Coalition (MRC) because I wanted to create representation and inclusion for immigrants and refugees in our university community. I wanted to educate the university about the migrant life and experience so that their personal biases were challenged with empathy and honesty. MRC is meaningful for me because it represents a legacy of migrants and refugees that are willing to take the extra-step to represent their community”

The President

Meet Daneev Imbert: the President of the Migrant Rights Coalition

Daneev Imbert ‘24 is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration specializing in Finance with a Minor in Studio Art. Brayan Hernandez (Founder of MRC) reached out to Daneev to join the e-board in May 2021. She joined the executive board as the Service Chair and later became Treasurer in October 2021, while maintaining her role as Service Chair. In February 2022, she passed over the Service Chair position and became the Treasurer of MRC and was voted in as President in April 2022 and re-elected in April 2023.

“I am truly honored to be serving as the current president of MRC. I joined MRC because both of my parents are immigrants. My mother immigrated from Haiti and my dad immigrated from the Dominican Republic. I joined because of all the struggles that they faced, and I wanted to empower those like my parents. Recently MRC added a new demographic to our mission: first-generaration Americans. Most of us on board are first generation Americans, and we felt that it was important for MRC to highlight and empower them, as many first-generation Americans understand the struggle of immigration firsthand. As president, I wanted to ensure that I created a safe space for our international students, immigrants and our first-generation American students, while still continuing the mission of MRC and empowering immigrants and refugees outside of CUA.”
